Martial Art Motivation - Improving Punches, Kicks, and Stomach Muscles

How would you like a big dose of martial art motivation?

What would you like to improve?

Your punching ability? Your kicks? How about getting in shape?

We have all heard that the way to achieve a goal is to break it down into bite-sized (manageable) chunks. Do mini-tasks, to achieve the greater goal.

This makes sense, right?

Martial Art Motivation Advice, Building Punches
Did you know that I use the clock to break my practice sessions into smaller chunks?

Much smaller, easy-to-perform tasks.

It all started with my punches, several years ago. I felt that I had no punch stamina. So, every hour on the hour, I got up and punched 10 quick punches. No big deal. In fact, 10 punches is nothing.

Still, I got up and punched 10 times, every hour. (I guess this is one of the benefits of working alone all day. Nobody to see me practice.)

The next day, I increased the number to 15 per hour. The next, 20 per hour. I kept going ... until I got up to about 50 an hour.

At 50 an hour, my arms started feeling wobbly by the end of the day.

Combine The Mini Sets for More Endurance
Eventually, I started combining the sets of 50, until I was punching 500 at a time. I did this to model quantity building for my students.

Now, even before the holidays, I find the need to start doing mini workouts every hour on the hour.

Are you starting to get any ideas?

Would you like to know my new martial mini goals?

Kicks and Tummy Crunches ...

What is it this time? (Pardon the pun.)

Well, yesterday, I did 50 crunches (intense sit-up), 10 leg stretches on each side, and then 10 "special" kicks on each side. ("special" = JKD attack, front-lead kicks). Every hour, I spent a total of four minutes crunching and kicking. Believe it or not, this morning, my legs and my stomach are a little sore.

I plan to build the quantity, a little at a time, over the next month or two.

Why did I choose those two actions for my hourly practice?

Well, I felt my kicks needed the work. They were looking a little less precise than normal. Balance didn't feel right. Timing was just a hair off. And so on.

And as for the tummy crunches .... well ... this past weekend, I had two martial artists over, in order to take photos for an upcoming martial-arts ebook. I bought a dozen doughnuts.

These guys, it turns out, don't eat fried pieces of dough. So, over the long weekend, I polished off eight of them. No kidding!

And so, every hour, on the hour ...

So, is there any skill you'd like to build where you just don't feel motivated?

Break it down into ridiculously small sets.

If you are looking for something to practice, may I suggest...
